Rabale MIDC is a working industrial estate: engineering and fabrication, electronics, plastics and moulding, pharmaceutical and chemical units, packaging suppliers, and the ancillary businesses that serve them. Along the highway sit corporate and IT offices.

The print is functional and repeat: product and rating labels, cartons and printed outers, technical documentation, test certificates, dealer and distributor material, and the site and safety signage that makes a facility legible.

It is five to ten minutes from our press, which makes it one of the easiest areas for us to serve properly - site visits, adhesion tests, folded samples and press approvals are all short.

The failures are predictable and all of them are specification decisions. A rating label abraded off a machine was surface-printed where it should have been sub-surface. A pack label that lifted had a general-purpose adhesive on a low-energy surface. A batch code that smudged was printed over a varnish.

So the questions come first: what surface, what temperature, what handling, what solvents, what reads it, and how long must it last. The specification follows from the answers rather than from a house standard.

For anything overprinted on the line, the coding window is sized, positioned and kept clear of varnish - and tested, because a window that will not hold coding is discovered at the filling line.

Being close means those tests happen on the real substrate with your own equipment rather than on a clean sample in a studio.

Board grade and flute are chosen for the stack and the transit, not for the shelf. A carton a grade too light creases along the fold lines under stacking, and a creased carton jams an erecting machine.

Where the pack is machine-erected, the machine's requirements come first - glue-flap size, grain direction, tolerance. A carton designed for hand-packing and then run through an erector jams, and the jam gets blamed on everything except the die-line.

Nothing structural goes to press without a physical dummy, made on the real board and folded and filled in the hand. It takes a couple of days and it is the most reliable way to save a packaging run.

Printed top-sheets on corrugated outers are inexpensive at volume and make a warehouse readable.

Manuals, installation guides, datasheets, spare-part lists, test certificates and warranty cards - treated as controlled documents rather than as design jobs.

Copy set from the approved source rather than retyped. Tables built rather than pasted as images so they stay correctable. Version and revision numbers printed on the piece. Reprints handled as revisions against the retained master.

Manuals used next to a machine want a stock that survives oil and hands and a binding that lies flat; fold-out drawings need the fold planned so the drawing opens without being torn out.

Certificates and warranty cards need controlled numbering, which is variable-data digital work.

Gate and identity boards, department and direction signage, safety and hazard signage, notice boards, and floor and bay marking where there is a warehouse.

Material and mounting decide the outcome. ACP for anything permanent outdoors; sun-board or foam board for interior and temporary use; retro-reflective where it has to read at night; floor materials rated for forklift traffic.

Safety and hazard content follows the standard your EHS team specifies. Our job is to print it correctly at the specified sizes and colours on material that survives the environment.

We measure on site and install. Sight-lines and mounting surfaces are not visible on a plan.

Polyester and metallised polyester, sub-surface printed, for rating and identification labels. Synthetic PP and polyester faces with matched adhesives for product labels. Coated paper only where the pack is dry-stored and short-lived.

Folding box board and duplex for cartons at the weight the stack requires; corrugated with printed top-sheets for outers.

For documentation, stocks that take handling; for fold-outs, a weight that folds without cracking.

For signage, ACP outdoors and acrylic or vinyl indoors, with fixings specified for the surface that is actually there.

Material and run length first. Then colours and coverage, then finishing and die tooling - which is a one-off that hurts on a first small run and stops mattering by the third reorder.

Versions multiply set-up rather than material: three language or SKU variants of the same label is three make-readies on offset and nearly free on digital, which is often what decides the press.

The savings that matter are ordering the right quantity, consolidating items into one run and one delivery, and getting the specification right the first time.

The largest cost is a rejected run. A label that fails at the filling line costs many times what the label cost.

Deliveries are scheduled around your receiving hours because several units run shifts. Urgent work can be collected. Deliveries can be split so you are not storing a year of labels at once.

More usefully, problems can be looked at. If something arrives wrong, someone sees it the same day rather than describing it over a phone.

Site visits for signage, measurement and installation are short and therefore actually happen rather than being replaced by a photograph and a guess.
