What the terms mean in practice
Above the line is broad reach: press, television, radio, outdoor, digital display. It builds familiarity with people who are not currently buying.
Below the line is targeted and physical: dealer and retail branding, point of sale, activation, exhibitions, direct material, trade incentives. It works on people who are close to a decision.
The labels are less useful than they used to be, but the underlying split - reach versus proximity - still describes a real choice about where money goes.
The question that actually decides it
Where is the decision made, and who is present?
If the buyer decides at home, on a phone, weeks before purchase - reach matters and above-the-line has a job. If the buyer decides standing in a shop, in front of a shelf or a counter, with a dealer talking - then below-the-line is not a supporting activity, it is the campaign.
For most manufacturers, agri-input brands and B2B businesses, it is firmly the second. For most impulse consumer goods, it is a mix. Very few businesses are genuinely the first.
Signs your budget is in the wrong place
Your sales team says customers arrive not knowing what you make. That is a proof and positioning gap, not a reach gap.
Distributors do not display your material. That is a trade-material quality problem, and no amount of reach fixes it.
You get enquiries that never convert. Often a mismatch between what the advertising implies and what you actually sell.
Your competitor is visible in every shop and you are visible on a hoarding. In a dealer-led category, they are winning.
What good BTL looks like
Material sized for the real space it will occupy. Boards specified to survive years rather than a season. Leaflets that answer the questions a buyer actually asks. Counter units that a small shop can spare room for.
And distribution that reaches the outlet - kitted per store, not shipped in bulk to a regional office and split by whoever is available.
Done properly it is unglamorous, measurable and cheap relative to media.
What we do here
We produce the below-the-line half - dealer and retail branding, point of sale, exhibitions, field material - designed and printed in one place, kitted per outlet and dispatched.
We plan and produce outdoor, and we work with your media plan, but we do not buy media.
If your brief genuinely needs a media-buying house, we will say so rather than take it and subcontract it quietly.
