What an in-house team is genuinely better at
Knowing the product. An internal marketer who has walked the plant and sat with the sales team understands things an agency will take a year to learn, if ever.
Speed on small things. A price change, a corrected phone number, a quick internal notice - waiting on an external supplier for those is absurd.
Institutional memory. Why the last campaign was structured that way, what the distributor network complained about, which claim legal will not approve.
Relationships. With sales, with distributors, with the plant. Those cannot be outsourced.
What an agency or studio is better at
Craft, at volume. Producing forty adaptations of a campaign consistently is a production discipline, and it is not a good use of an internal marketer's week.
Outside perspective. Everybody inside a company has stopped noticing what is confusing about how it describes itself.
Specialist capability that does not justify a full-time hire: photography, packaging structure, regulated artwork, exhibition design.
Capacity at a peak. Launches, exhibitions and seasons need three times the normal output for six weeks and then stop.
The split that works
Internal owns strategy, priorities, approvals and the relationships. External owns craft, production and peak capacity.
Critically, one side owns the artwork masters - and it should be whoever will maintain them. Split ownership is how a company ends up with four versions of its logo.
The brief is the interface. A written brief with the objective, the audience, the constraints and the date does more for the relationship than any amount of goodwill.
Where both fail
Both fail at consistency when nobody owns it. A brand book that nobody enforces is decoration.
Both fail when approvals have no deadline. The single most common cause of a late campaign is an approval chain with no date attached to it.
And both fail when the physical production is treated as an afterthought bought on price. The best strategy in the world arrives at the dealer counter as a piece of printed board, and if that board is wrong none of the rest happened.
How we usually fit
Most of our clients have their own marketing people. We are used as craft and production capacity rather than as a replacement - concepts sometimes come from us, sometimes from them, and the artwork, versioning and production run through here.
That works because the handover is clean: files, guidelines and artwork belong to the client and are handed over on request.
It also means we are comfortable working inside an existing brand book rather than pushing to redesign everything first.
